I recently had the opportunity to work along side a dance clothing suppier. They showed interest in me working with them but I felt I had to prove to them, setting up multiple shoots with dance has opened many avenues of fresh work to be created. Without hesitating I set up a shoot with Stephany Calvillo and MUA/Hairstylist Alexandria Adams to create a little tester.

I decided to shoot at my old house in Anaheim. The floors are old and dirty, the light comes from a huge window, perfect for images with lots of contrast. Stephany  is not new to dance, she has been doing it since she was tiny!!! The moves she displays is a plus because everyone involved including myself were inspired. Everything ran smooth, i just wish we had more daylight.

Having worked with Alexandria I felt she could understand my words of emotion and artistic description and bring that feel to the hair and make up. She executes and is great to work with. We are currently working on another shoot so look out for that. I also learned she is allergic to cats(sniffle,Sniffle….sneeze.) Regardless it doesnt stop a true artist.

Ive really enjoyed shooting dance from salsa dancers to B-Boys to now Ballet. I plan to shoot more of these in the near future. Amyone interested in working on the next shoot or if your a new photographer wondering how to, messege me!!!

From my latest shoot with the Career Academy of Beauty I had the opportunity to work with a very talented artist, Raychel Diane Wiener. What she brought was different and I felt a bit intimidated. Actually, cause I know the way she think,  she wasnt really challenging my photo abilities to take a clean photo but rather create a lighting scene that would capture her mindset……
I know it had to be dark, beautiful and mesmerizing. I also had very limited time to thing it through. So heres what we came up with. Enjoy what you see….

i realize lighting is the essential key to creating shadows

In translation to English, the title “geisha” is two words.

“gei” meaning “ART”
“sha” meaning “PERSON”

As for this shoot, I’d say make up artist Claudia Tajeda and model Andie Otto both qualify for “geisha” status. The make up was phenomenal. It took several hours to create these colors and seemed so easy for Claudia. The detail is done with precision and patience as every color is applied. I would often visit Claudia’s station as she prepared Andie and was mesmerized by the geisha in her. She claims that I’m “going to make her a millionaire”. The first thought I had was ”It’s your fault…”
The shoot was in studio and as usual, we only had one hour to execute it. With all lights set up beforehand and properly metered with my trusty Sekonic 401-358 Flash Meter, the real challenge awaited. You see, Andie is not a typical model like most would expect. She’s more like a good friend that said, “Yes, I’ll do it.” Andie doesn’t rock the runways in New York nor does she fly all over the world for major photoshoots, she is an everyday person like me. But, I will say this: Andie must have been a geisha in her past life because she captured the true look and emotion that a geisha gives. I felt as if she was a model who was paid millions. Words from Brandon Flowers of “The Killers” once said, “Andy you’re a Star….” I think so.
With this said, I just want to thank everyone for making this shoot exactly the way I had planned- easy.
